Since 1971 the Community Film Workshop's mission has been to provide film making training to women and people of color, to provide low cost film equipment rental & to inform members of available filmmaker's grants. CFW provides low cost editing, equipment, & facility rental to it's members. CFW also provides programs such as film history & aesthetics, media literacy, and it's intensive 16mm film training program.
The Community Film Workshop has established a reputation for quality, hands-on, 16mm instruction. The production workshops are limited to ten students emphasizing individual instruction and cooperative learning. CFW's training is comparable to graduate level courses with each student scripting, editing, and shooting their own project. These films can be used as a sample reel for apprenticeships, internships, grants, festivals, and college admission.

The CFW has been honored for outstanding commitment to the Illinois Film and Video Community by such organizations as: Center for New Televisions "Community Service Award" Community Television Network Illinois Alliance for Art Education "Media Educator" Festival of Illinois Film and Video Artists Chicago Critics Association "Big Shoulders Award" as well as being featured in the spring issue of Hope Magazine.
