Title: The Stray Show Artist : Various Artists

Last December saw the beginning of a new initiative that took Chicago completely by surprise. The Stray Show, a collaborative event organized by Chicago's emerging contemporary art organizations and Thomas Blackman Associates (TBA) was the first and very successful attempt at turning the limelight on this rising young community of alternative galleries, curators and artists. This year the addition of unconventional spaces, art collectives and emerging galleries from around the United States will expand the perspective on these innovative groups.

The Stray Show promises to continue focusing on these seminal and atypical spaces, and to highlight the independent nature of their programs. Looking beyond the local scope, these participants have been coordinating joint exhibitions with likeminded groups in other cities, some outside the country, making connections and establishing ties across disciplines and locales. Continuing in Chicago's avant-garde tradition, The Stray Show and its participants are asserting their vision for the global art community's next generation, forming a network of people, practices and philosophies.

In December, Stray will be presented in a warehouse space at 1418 North Kingsbury in Chicago's Goose Island Industrial Corridor. Boasting 37,000 gross square feet, the space will house approximately 40 exhibitors, curated project spaces, a video/lecture theater as well as a lounge and nightclub. Most of the participants are accustomed to setting up wherever and whenever possible, either exhibiting new talent out of their own garages, apartment galleries or as collaborative groups without a regular venue. While location may not be a primary concern for this rising community of independents, The Stray Show offers the opportunity to give exposure to the activity and work that might otherwise go unnoticed.
