DV edit prep
With any nonlinear editing system, it is a good idea to know the system before you begin shooting so you know what your system is capable of. Don't assume anything. Always do a trial run of any effects, tricks, media exchanges between machines, etc. before you invest any time or money into a project. If it is your first time editing with a particular system, don't learn with a project you care about. Take a training course, assist someone else first or do a few trial projects of lesser importance. As with everything, you learn by doing and you don't want to spend your time in the edit bay learning as you are wasting precious editing time. If you don't know what you're doing find someone that does.

Conform from NLE
Editing on a 24 fps based editing system, such as the Avid Film Composer, Avid Media Composer 8000, Avid Media Composer Offline with film options or the Lightworks editing system is one of the best ways to edit a project destined for film conforming. A significant advantage is that all of the footage seen on a 24 fps system is identical to the physical film (frame for frame). This allows editing on any frame with 100% accuracy in the film conforming process. Another advantage: There is 20% more disk space when digitizing at 24fps versus 30 fps.

Conform from video
Conforming film to video normally involves interlocking a film synchronizer and VTR, allowing frame accurate matching of 30 frames of video to corresponding 24 frames of film. This process is completed at the lab after your video cut is complete. There are certain guidelines that you should keep in mind in order to make the conforming process smooth and hassle free.
