What is a Pre-production Package?
Okay. You've finally done it. You've decided to make the film that's been bouncing around in your head between your conscious and unconscious mind for longer than you can remember. The organizational steps you take from this moment to the first day of shooting can make the difference between a smooth production and a nightmare. An invaluable tool in insuring a smooth production is a booklet that you should put together; it's called a Pre-production Package or Pre-production Book. The size and amount of detail should be congruent to the size of the production. The books can range from a few pages to something the size of a phone book. If you are planning a five minute short, you are probably not going to need the level of detail inherent in the latter; but if you are going to tackle a feature length project, the size of your completed book could pass for the yellow pages.
