Film Directing Shot by Shot : Visualizing from Concept to Screen

by Steven D. Katz

Film Directing Shot by Shot offers a good introduction to the rudiments of film production. Steven D. Katz walks his readers through the various stages of moviemaking, advising them at every turn to visualize the films they wish to produce. Katz believes that one of the chief tasks of filmmaking is to negotiate between our three-dimensional reality and the two-dimensionality of the screen. He covers the number of technical options filmmakers can use to create a satisfying flow of shots, a continuity that will make sense to viewers and aptly tell the film's story. Katz provides in-depth coverage of production design, storyboarding, spatial connections, editing, scene staging, depth of frame, camera angles, point of view, and the various types of stable compositions and moving camera shots.

The IFILM Digital Video Filmmaker's Handbook 2001

by Maxie D. Collier

"The handbook is eminently readable, thanks to a deeply personal tone that flows throughout the text. Collier is genuinely interested in steering doe-eyed filmmakers clear of potential pitfalls. In fact, hisfirst chapter is skillfully arranged to guide traditional sprocket-heads through the zeros and ones of the DV format. The result is an unintimidating effect that drives readers further into the details." Res: The Magazine of Digital Filmmaking

Mr. Perkins does not elucidate the topic of film theory, but instead takes a heavy handed approach to the subject and leaves those unfamiliar with the subject scratching her head.

Understanding Movies

by Louis Giannetti

There is no shortage of comprehensive textbook tomes in this competitive market (several new ones have appeared since this 8th edition). But Giannetti achieves the "right" level of diction, readability, and detail whereas the other books tend to disappoint more frequently. Some are simply too obvious, unacademic, unselective in use of illustrations and others too weighted down by film jargon left over from graduate school. Even if Giannetti's distinction between "formalism" and "expression" occasionally seems difficult and overly arbitrary, it provides his overview with a focus that is lacking in the competition
