April Screening

With the theater full, this month’s Screen-2-Stream was a rockin’ good time, as always. The event took place on April 28th at Frankie J’s Methadome Theater on Broadway. With this month’s line up heavy with documentaries, the crowd walked away a little more enlightened about the world around them.

The first place winner this month was titled A Fish Almost Eaten by a Shark by Zaida Sanabia. As our first high school aged filmmaker, Zaida presented the trials and tribulations of homosexuality to the screen in a beautiful way. The documentary chronicled Zaida’s experiences as she attempted to start a gay-straight alliance at her high school. Though she faced suspension and possible expulsion, Zaida continued to work towards her goal, filming the entire process. The result is a film that seemed to touch and inspire the entire audience.

In second place, a long time favorite of IFV, Dan LaCloche won with Corporations Rule. Slightly different from his usual submissions, this documentary attempted to find the motivations behind an Earth First protest held at Moraine Valley. Through artful narration we learn that either there was no motivation or it was top secret because even Dan wasn’t able to figure it out. This film was definitely a crowd pleaser as just about no one could contain their laughter.

Finally, the third place winner was Michael Thelin with a public service announcement for MADD. This thirty second PSA had more impact than many full-length features. The audience was reminded of the tragedies that follow drunk driving in an innovative and effectively shot video. Though sobering, the audience was obviously able to appreciate its importance.
So from comedy to tragedy, this month’s Screen-2-Stream had it all. Not to mention the great prizes, courtesy of the Chicago Film Office, awarded to the brainiacs that were able to answer Angie’s trivia questions. If you couldn’t make it to this month’s screening make sure to keep checking the website for more information about May’s event.
